Reformation Connection: Did you know....?
An early chronicler of the life of Katharina (von Bora) Luther, Martin Luther’s wife, wrote of her escape with 11 other nuns, saying that they were jammed into the fishmonger’s wagon “like herring barrels.” Today, we might describe it as being “packed in like sardines.” Later, readers mistakenly took this to mean that they were literally snuck out IN fish barrels on Holy Saturday 1523. Given the size of such wagons and the number of people involved, this is highly unlikely and Martin Luther never mentions it. What is true is that it was highly dangerous. That same year, in a neighboring region controlled by Duke George, an enemy of Luther, a man was hanged for aiding another such escape of nuns. (Excerpted from Lutheran Mythbusting or . . . 10 Things You Thought You Knew about Martin Luther by Timothy Wengert, an ELCA pastor who is professor emeritus of Reformation history at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia.)
