Confirmation Ministry
is a pastoral and educational
ministry of the church
which helps the baptized child
through Word and Sacrament
identify more deeply
with the Christian community
and participate more fully
in its mission. |
Confirmation Ministry at Calvary is primarily geared for those in 7th - 9th grades, and involves
participation in Christian worship, education, service, and fellowship. Through the congregation’s
Youth and Family Ministry, there are other opportunities for activities, recreation, learning, service,
and Christian growth. This ministry intends to lead young people in a spiritual path that will prepare
them to make a public affirmation of their baptismal faith, thus underscoring the work of the Holy
Spirit in their lives. Luther wrote the Small Catechism for "the heads of households to teach to their
families." Parental involvement and nurture is a key component to this ministry. The Rite of
Confirmation is usually celebrated on Reformation Sunday, the last Sunday in October.
An overview of the program:
First year: The focus here is on the Small Catechism of Martin Luther. The basic teachings of the
church are summarized in this handbook of faith that includes the 10 Commandments, the Apostles’
Creed, the Lord’s Prayer and the Sacraments of Baptism & Holy Communion. Confirmation classes
ordinarily meet on Wednesday evenings. Enrollment for Confirmation Ministry takes place in September.
Second Year: In this year of Confirmation Ministry, students build on the previous year’s teachings,
and develop individualized projects that reveal how they are able to relate the basics of faith
to daily life. These projects are defined, carried out, and reviewed in conjunction with the Pastor
and other adult lay leaders.
Regular attendance at Sunday worship, Sunday School, and Confirmation classes are part of Calvary’s
Confirmation Ministry.
