Our Commitment to Fellowship
The people of Calvary smile a lot. They like
doing activities together, and sharing in enjoyable
and rewarding events. It is a reflection of the
Bible’s call to rejoice in the Lord, and to enjoy
each other and all of God’s creation.
Special Groups
Tables of Eight
is a fellowship opportunity for the adults of Calvary Lutheran
Church to get together four or five times a year and
share in fun, food, and fellowship. Delectable
gourmet menus are provided to help eliminate the
guesswork of what to fix and what to bring.
Typically the groups are comprised of four or five
couples/group, with some including both married and
single people. Members of each group rotate hosting
the dinner and preparing a portion of the feast.
Sort of an organized "pot luck" without the "luck!"
Men’s Breakfast is an excellent
opportunity to meet with other men for Christian
fellowship, stimulating discussion, and a pleasant
morning meal. Calvary holds the event on the third
Saturday of every month (except June, July, Aug and
Dec) at 8 am in the Fellowship Hall. Men first enjoy
breakfast, which includes eggs to order, meat, toast
or pastries, fruit and coffee. After eating, the
topic for the event is presented by a speaker,
followed by open and sometimes lively discussion,
all lasting for 30-45 minutes. This event is open to
men of all ages (preferably Senior High School and
above). Five dollars is collected at the door to
reimburse for the cost of breakfast. Men are asked
to RSVP by the Tuesday before the event to the
church office (858-755-2855).
Calvary Cruisers
is a fun loving social group open to anyone who is 50 or older. Meeting monthly
(except for summer), the troop keeps an aggressive
social schedule that includes a wide range of
exciting and fun events. Trips to the theatre, wine
tasting, bus trip to the Getty museum, train
excursions and whale watching are just some of the
activities enjoyed by Calvary Cruisers. If you are
interested in joining the fun, please contact the
church office at 858-755-2855. Keep an eye out for
additional event announcements in the Sunday
bulletin and The Calvary Communicator.
Other Activities
Wonderful Wednesday Suppers are a spiritual renewal and emotional
lift in the middle of the week. Come join us for a
casual meal and caring fellowship every Wednesday
night from 6:00-7:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall.
Suppers are held during the months of September
through May for all members and interested
visitors. Meals are organized and prepared by
members or groups of members, and food/serving items
are provided by Calvary. Suppers also coordinate
well with other events on Wonderful Wednesday,
including Kids’ Choir, Seventh and Eighth
Grade Confirmation Classes, Adult Bible Study and
Adult Choir. To eat with us, just come. A donation
of $5 a person or $15 a family is gratefully
accepted
Summer Beach BBQs
take advantage of our location being close to the Pacific Ocean
and allows us to appreciate God’s beautiful world in
fellowship with fellow members, sharing a casual
meal and devotions in a stunning setting. The Beach
Barbecues are held every Wednesday night during the
summer months of June through August, starting at 6
pm. Hot barbecue grills and serving tables are
provided, so bring something to barbecue for you and
your family, something to share, and your own eating
utensils, chairs and/or blankets. Use your family
Beach Box specially provided for all members by Rick
and Ann Hein. Adults talk and children play before
and during the meal, which is followed by a songfest
to guitar music and the sound of the surf, then a
short devotional or personal testimonial of faith.
The Roland Matthias Memorial Golf Tournament
is held every October and is a very popular event at
Calvary. This tournament is in honor of Roland
Matthias, a long time member of the church and an
avid golfer. Participants of all skill levels are
invited to play. Golfers tee off at the beautiful
Loma Santa Fe Executive Course, vying for numerous awards
and prizes. Stop by the Calvary office to see each
year’s winners.
Seasonal Events
The Advent Craft Event
is a luncheon and craft
combination. After lunch, participants are shown how
to craft their very own advent wreaths. These can be
enjoyed by the entire family during the countdown to
Christmas, and also make excellent gifts. The event
is usually held on the first Sunday in December from
12:00 noon to 2 pm. The cost is $5/individual or
$15/family.
The Christmas Cookie Exchange
occurs once a year in December and is held at a member’s home.
Participating women bake 3 to 4 dozen of their
favorite cookies and then swap them for a variety of
other cookies at the exchange. Its great fun and a
wonderful way to ring in the holiday season.
