Get to know ... Sandy Theurer, Our Minister of Children, Youth and Family

Sandy Theurer

A member of Calvary first, Sandy volunteered her time on the Christian Education Ministry Team, planning and being a part of many family activities at Calvary. In the fall of 2007, Sandy answered the call to continue building our energetic and growing family ministry and became our Director of Youth and Family Ministry.

Originally from Massachusetts, she is still a Red Sox and Patriots fan, although she does love the Padres and Chargers. Sandy grew up cross country skiing in the winter and spent her summers on the beaches of Cape Cod.

Sandy graduated from Western New England College with a degree in marketing and then began a career in the insurance industry with Travelers Insurance in Hartford, CT. She left Travelers in 1997 to be a full time mom. While "staying at home" she managed being President of two PTA’s and VP of fundraising of a third, oversaw a before and after school program, taught fitness classes at the YMCA, planned golf tournaments for charity, and in her spare time began coursework on her Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.

She has a teenage daughter Alison. She lost her second daughter Madison Ann to heart disease in May of 1997. Sandy left Massachusetts and moved to Phoenix in 2003, then spent a year and a half in Buffalo, NY before moving to San Diego in 2005.

Upon moving to San Diego, she found her spiritual home at Calvary. Soon after arriving, Sandy shared that she had taught confirmation classes at her previous congregation and was quickly recruited to the Christian Education team where she began creating our mentoring program.

As our Director of Youth and Family Ministry, she combines her commitment of faith, children, youth and families with her proven ability to do twenty five things at one time. Sandy attended the Center for Youth Ministries/The Youth & Family Institute’s Certification School where she received her certification as a Youth & Family Minister in May 2008. She was mentored by Rev. Dr. Dick Hardel from the Youth and Family Institute and together they worked with Calvary’s Vision Team to create and shape a ministry that supports our congregation as we Proclaim, Nurture and Pass on Faith.

Sandy’s journey will continue as the wife of Wayne Theurer, a former Youth and Family Minister himself; they were married on November 20, 2010. Wayne has had custody of his three nephews for four years, which Sandy and Wayne together are planning to adopt. Sandy’s commitment to do God’s work will now be supported by a loving husband, as together they plan to live out a life of mission and ministry with the families of Calvary and their own.
