Monday Meals for the Hungry

Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.
Isaiah 58: 6-8

A valuable Social Ministry activity is our "Monday Meal." Several years ago, Calvary teamed up with First Lutheran Church in downtown San Diego, committing to serve at one of their Monday evening meals for those in need. We provide 4 members of our congregation on the 4th Monday of each month from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Volunteers help serve the dinner as well as clean up afterwards. As anyone who has served will tell you, it is a very rewarding experience that puts everything into perspective. After serving just one time, your big problems don’t seem so big anymore. A copy of the flyer with more information is available in the church office, and a sign-up sheet is located in the Fellowship Hall. Or contact the church office at 858-755-2855. Grab a spouse, a friend, or better yet a kid, and sign up now! You can also go on your own either Monday evening or Friday morning to help.

Blood Drives

Calvary cooperates with the American Red Cross and the San Diego Blood Bank by hosting periodic blood drives. To find out when the next drive is scheduled, please contact the office at 858-755-2855. When you have an appointment please arrive about 10 minutes early allowing for needed paperwork and have a photo ID or 2 non-photo ID's or your Donor ID Card with you. To make an Appointment, you can sign up at www.givelife.org Code:CalvaryLuth or in the church office.

For additional questions you can reach our Parish Nurse, Linda Lum at 760-929-0333 or email elinda@roadrunner.com. If you have questions about deferrals or the procedures for donating blood please contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-843-2949 x7066.

Christmas Angels

It is better to give than to receive, especially at Christmas. We are very proud of our "Angels" program as it reaches out to our community and finds ways to brighten the lives of so many deserving families. We create a wonderful memorable celebration of Christ’s birth for those families that are down on their luck, suffered a tragic loss or cannot be with their loved ones due to military service. Needed gifts for these families are donated by the adopting Calvary Angel family, gift wrapped by a special group of Angel helpers and then personally delivered, along with everything needed for a Christmas dinner, by Angel adult and youth teams.

Alternative Gift Faire

During the holiday season, we have the opportunity to help financially those less fortunate than ourselves. At the Alternative Christmas Gift Faire, you can find the perfect gift for the person who has everything. Through this Gift Faire, the focus shifts from giving more gifts to those who already have many material possessions to those who are hungry, sick and living without hope. More than 10 charitable organizations are represented. Individuals who would like to contribute choose a charity and make a donation in the name of a person. That person receives an attractive gift card letting them know that a donation was made in their name and the name of the giver. The donated money goes directly to the specified charity.
