Sacraments are the Core of Worship
Lutherans accept two Sacraments as God-given means for
touching the lives of people with his grace. Although they are
not the only means of God’s self-revelation, Baptism and Holy
Communion are visible acts of God’s love.
In Baptism, God freely
offers his grace and lovingly establishes a new community. It is
in Baptism that people become members of Christ’s Body on earth,
the Church. At Calvary Lutheran Church, Baptisms are conducted
during a special segment of the service that recognizes the
responsibility of the family and congregation in teaching the
child/individual about Christian principles. Contact the church
office at 858-755-2855 to learn more and to schedule a Baptism
at Calvary.
In Holy Communion -- often
called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist -- those who come to
the table receive in bread and wine the body and blood of their
Lord. In the Sacrament of Holy Communion we celebrate the Real
Presence of Christ in, with, and under the forms of bread and
wine. All Baptized Christians who desire to partake of the
Sacrament and trust in our Lord’s words, "broken and shed for
you for the forgiveness of sins," are welcome to the Lord’s
Table.
Communion is offered by intinction (dip wafer/bread into a
separate chalice), or by drinking from an individual glass or
Common Cup. Those with limited mobility may receive Communion
while remaining seated. Children are always welcome. Those who
have yet to participate in preparation for first communion are
welcome to come forward for a baptismal blessing.
